Outrun the Sun Race Against Melanoma

IU Department of Public Health chair Dr. Marie Swanson and faculty member Dr. Lisa Hess were among more than 70 individuals who participated in Team Williams in the recent Outrun the Sun Race Against Melanoma at Fort Harrison State Park in Lawrence, IN.

Team Williams was the largest team in the run/walk and was organized in memory of Dr. Stephen Williams, former director of the IU Simon Cancer Center.

MPH Faculty News

Department of Public Health faculty members Cindy Stone, DrPH, RN and Joan Henkle, DNS, RN authored Chapter 20 in the recently published book, Service Learning in Higher Education: Paradigms and Challenges. Chapter 20 highlights “WESCO Community Health Assessment: A Partnership that Works”. Dr. Henkle is also a co-author of Chapter 30, “Utilization of Asset-Based Community Development in Calnali, Mexico: An International Application of ABCD”. Service Learning combines the best of the teaching and learning service sectors and has been a powerful and practical methodology used by both professors in their work with students.

MPH Faculty News

Dr. Lisa Hess, Assistant Professor of Public Health has just published the second edition of a collaborative text entitled “Fundamentals of Cancer Prevention,” with Dr. David Alberts. The book delivers “leading-edge information for primary physicians and health care providers in an effort to continually stress the importance of cancer prevention and the latest early-detection strategies” (publication release), and provides a detailed review on the current status of cancer prevention, including epidemiology, screening and chemoprevention strategies. This book brings together the expertise of specialists in the field of cancer prevention and control to provide the community of health professionals with insight to the disciplines of cancer prevention and control.
