Welcome and thank you for your interest in our doctoral program in Epidemiology. The PhD program in Epidemiology was designed to develop scholars who will carry out original research that will contribute to the understanding of the occurrence of illness and injury, including investigations of the etiology, prevention, and control of disease and injury. Epidemiologists are the basic scientists in public health who collect and provide the data upon which population-based health surveillance and preparedness are founded. Ultimately, our graduates will contribute to improving public health, promoting individual well-being, and eliminating health disparities across Indiana and around the world.
Our program is housed in the Indiana University School of Medicine, which has a distinguished reputation, both nationally and internationally. Our campus and community partnerships with epidemiologists and other medical professionals provide doctoral students with a rich environment for collaborative research. In addition, the Department of Public Health has developed many linkages with government agencies engaged in public health as well as a comprehensive array of local, state, and national organizations with interests in improving health. Finally, we are pleased with the access to resources provided by our industry partners. Our PhD students will have the opportunity to interact with these partners during their training to identify mentors to support their training and professional development.
We designed our PhD program to meet the needs of both full-time and part-time students. Many of the part-time students particularly, will be individuals who are currently working in Epidemiology positions in various settings and, thus, contribute to a very rich learning environment for their student colleagues. In addition, the wide array of areas of our faculty members’ special expertise will enable our PhD students to tailor their course work, research and other experiences to meet their particular career needs and interests. Currently we have six full-time Epidemiology faculty members in the Department of Public Health in addition to 16 jointly appointed Epidemiology faculty members in other schools on the IUPUI campus, from the Lilly Corporation, and from local and state health departments.
Finally, we want you to know that we are here for you, our current and future students. We welcome your questions and comments about our PhD program in Epidemiology.
