PhD in Health Policy & Management
Welcome and thank you for your interest in our doctoral program in Health Policy and Management! This program is specifically designed for students interested in pursuing careers in research and leadership in the areas of health policy, health services, and health care management.
As a core discipline within the field of public health, health policy and management (HPM) focuses on the creation of new knowledge and the application of research findings to improve the effectiveness of public health and health service organizations within and across the public, private, and non-profit sectors both domestically and internationally. With a PhD degree in HPM, you will be prepared to take on new roles as scientific and policy leaders and administrators in academic, governmental, non-governmental, and industry settings.
During the program, you will learn to develop and conduct health policy, health services, and health management research and to translate, apply, and communicate findings to improve the public’s health. The first three years of the program will be focused on completing a wide-variety of learning experiences, including traditional classroom-based instruction, advanced graduate seminars, field-based learning activities with real-world policymakers, and opportunities to participate in faculty research projects. During the final time in the program, you will design and carry out an original dissertation research project to demonstrate and apply your expanding professional knowledge.
We have designed the program to meet the needs of both full and part-time students. Many part-time students currently work in public health or health care settings. We have several full-time HPM PhD faculty members in the Department of Health Policy and Management, as well as many others involved in HPM research and teaching in other schools on the IUPUI campus. The HPM PhD program faculty has a wide array of training and experience which will allow you to tailor your course work, research and other experiences to meet your particular career needs and interests.
Our campus and community partnerships with health policy and healthcare industry leaders provide doctoral students with a rich environment for learning and collaborative research. We have a long standing relationship with the Indiana University School of Medicine, which has a distinguished reputation, both nationally and internationally.
We want you to know that we are here for you, our current and future students! We welcome your questions and comments about our PhD program in Health Policy and Management.
